Any renovation, repair, or demolition project in an older structure can disturb lead-based paint and other leaded materials, releasing hazardous dust. For Property Managers and Maintenance Staff

As a property manager or maintenance professional, you are responsible for the health and safety of your tenants and team. Adding lead abatement to your skills and knowledge certifications provides continually job flexibility and the ability to work on many varied abatement sites. The skills and experience obtained via asbestos abatement are easily translatable to the safe removal of lead and can provide you with one more tool in your efforts to keep people safe.

Course Time: Please note the course is scheduled from 8am to approximately 3-4pm each day, with planned breaks throughout the day. 

Course Outline:

All construction, demolition or materials disturbance occurring in older buildings, vessels or structures can expose workers and other site occupants to lead if the site is not controlled properly and workers protected adequately.

This 2-Day training delivers the knowledge necessary to prepare workers for lead abatement activities.

Attendees will learn how to safely set-up the necessary engineering controls and implement administrative controls to safely handle lead containing materials and clean lead contaminated surfaces. In addition to the techniques of abatement, particular emphasis will be placed on worker protection and safety, and the critical importance of cleanup and waste disposal issues.

Core Course Modules:

  • Lead Recognition & Health Hazards: Understanding lead properties, where it is found in older structures, and how exposure impacts the nervous, respiratory and other body systems.
  • Regulatory Compliance: An overview of Provincial and Federal environmental regulations and standards for lead hazard control.
  • Safe Work Practices & PPE: Selecting and using personal protective equipment (PPE), enforcing hygiene practices, and establishing job site containment.
  • Abatement Techniques: Constructing hoarding, implementing negative air pressure, monitoring the site, clean-up techniques, removal methods and prohibitions.
  • Cleanup & Disposal: Proper decontamination, waste handling, and final surface wipe-down clearance tests.
